Straight Draw in Poker
Table of content:
The game of poker involves two kinds of hands: made hands and drawing hands. Made hands are super easy to follow when compared to drawing hands. A drawing hand is basically an unmade hand which can be completed on the turn when a suitable card comes. There are almost 10 drawing hands and all of them have different strengths. One such hand is a straight draw in poker and we will be discussing it in this post. A poker straight draw has moderate strength in comparison with the other ones.
A straight draw in poker occurs when you have five cards of the same suit in a row. It is ranked fifth in the poker hand rankings list and is very easy to identify. The draw occurs when one or both of your hole cards allow you to make a five card straight. The highest possible straight draw in poker is a “Broadway”, that is, A-K-Q-J-10. It is considered a good poker hand and can prove to be very valuable.
A straight draw in poker can be played in two different forms: open ended straight draw and inside straight draw. Open ended straight draw occurs when a player has four cards of the same suit and the straight can be completed from both the ends. People are most familiar with open ended straight. An inside straight draw occurs when there are four cards of the same suit, but one card is missing in the middle, and this can make it slightly difficult to make this hand.
Poker straight draws are very powerful and have some advantages over flushes. They seem more covered when the players are in the last position battle. This will benefit you by bluffing your opponent, as he might think that you do not hold that particular card. Moreover, a player frequently gets a combination of hole cards which can complete a straight when there is a wide preflop range.
You can play a straight hand in poker aggressively to make your opponent fold and to damage his share. This strategy is referred to as ‘semi-bluffing’. Here, you are bluffing because you do not hold any worthy hand but there is hope that the hand can become a monster hand in future rounds.
There can be another scenario where you can raise your opponent’s continuation bet and then look to bet again even if you do not make a hand. Though these strategies involve risks, you must be able to understand the different hand ranges and your opponent’s capabilities so that you can decide till when you have to stop betting.
Poker straight draws are unmade hands, they might not be useful in a current hand but have a potential to become best if a particular card comes. To make your hand worthwhile, you must be competent enough to understand the strategies involved in the hand along with your opponent’s mind. Learning about drawing hands is not an easy task but with enough practice, you can master it.
