How To Play Rummy 500 And The Rules Of The Game?

500 rummy is a popular version of the rummy card game. The Canasta Rummy is said to have originated from Rummy 500.

How to play rummy 500

500 rummy has many names such as pinochle rummy, Michigan rummy, Persian rummy. This game can be played by 2 to 8 players, but it is most suited for 3 to 5.

This version is different from other games in that here the player reaching 500 points wins. The points are won for melded cards and lost for unmelded cards remaining in the hand when someone goes out. Also, you are not restricted to only the top card of the discard pile. You can take a card to lower down in the pile also. Now, some may ask how do you play 500 rummy, and what are the rules for playing 500 rummy?

How To Play Rummy 500?

  • 500 rummy uses a standard deck of 52 or 54 (2 jokers).
  • The number of cards dealt depends on the number of players. (covered in a different section)

This version is played similarly to any rummy card game. You have to meld the cards by making sets or runs of 3 or 4 cards.

What Are The Rummy 500 Rules?

  • You can take the top card of the stock or any card from the discard pile. The rummy 500 rules for the discard pile are slightly different, which we covered below separately.
  • You can lay down your melded cards during your turn, after drawing but before discarding. You can lay down a group of cards or add to cards already laid down.
  • You have to discard 1 card from your hand.
  • Jokers (if used) can represent any card you choose, even if that card is already used in another meld.
  • The round is over when one player has melded and laid all the cards or there are no more cards left in the stockpile.
  • There is usually no bonus for finishing first.

What Is The Discard Pile In Rummy 500?

In this version, you can select any card from the discard pile (not just the top card). However, when drawing a card from the discard pile, you must follow the rules below:

  • You must take all the cards on top of (i.e., discarded after) the card you want.
  • The selected card must immediately be used. You can use it and lay down a meld or add it to a meld already on the table.
  • The other cards drawn from the discard pile may either be melded or will be added to the hand.

What Is Meant By Calling "Rummy!"?

In 500 rummy point system, if one of the competitors, puts away a card which could be compiled or puts away the discarded pile in such a state where it does hold potential to combine cards without any number of cards from any competitors hand, then before the person next to you draws, apart from the one who discarded can call ‘Rummy’ and interpret a discard pile if it seems relevant. Further, the game continues as normal. Thereafter, the player (other than the one who called for rummy) now has turned and the same continues clockwise.
An example for the same is, let’s assume that there is a 7 8 9 on the board and someone discards a 6 or 10, any player other than the discarder can call "Rummy!", take the card and meld it.

What Is Floating?

500 card rummy rules also have a term called Floating. Floating is basically a version where you are allowed to combine and blend all the cards together, but since the game does not end and there’s no discard, the game lasts around the table as you ‘Float’ When your turn rolls around (assuming no one else has gone out in the meanwhile):
1. A card can be drawn from stock and can straight away be discarded, which eventually puts an end to the game
2. Draw out multiple cards from a bundle of discarded ones and compile all of them together and which will put an end to the game
3. Compile all the cards withdrawn from stock or all the cards withdrawn from the discarded bunch, and float yet again for some other round
4. Withdraw the card from the bunch of discarded ones, combine them, and now you are left with a single or more cards in your hand. And at this stage, everything is back to normal.

Rummy 500 Variants: Types of Rummy 500

There are many variations of 500 rummy out of which we have covered 3 popular ones as follows-

Variants of rummy 500

Dealer's gambit- There are 2-4 jokers used in this game. Also, there are no penalties for holding a joker in hand once a round is over.

Partnership 500 rum- This is played in a partnership. 4 players form 2 teams and the partners face each other across the table. The partners try to play off on each other's matched sets and run to go out as soon as possible.

Persian rummy- Here, a 56 card deck (52+4 jokers) is used. Jokers cannot be used as wildcards but must be melded into sets of three or four jokers (like any other card). Jokers cannot be used in a sequence. 1 joker has 20 points.

Aces In Rummy 500

Here comes another important question on how many cards in rummy 500 have? Let's see.

Aces in rummy 500 can be used either as the highest card (Q♠ K♠ A♠) or the lowest card ( A♠ 2♠ 3♠).

In some 500 rummy games, “going around the corner" is allowed. This means you can make 1 sequence where Ace is both high and low (e.g. Q♠ K♠ A♠ 2♠).

If going around the corner is not allowed, then you have to make separate runs (Q♠K♠A♠ and 2♠3♠4♠)

Value Of Aces

When an ace is used as a high card then the points are 15. If it is used as a low card then the points are 9. In some games point values of an ace (as a low card) can have 1 point or 5 points.

What is 500 Rummy? 500 Rummy, also known as Pinochle Rummy, is a popular variation of the classic Rummy card game. It is typically played with two to eight players and involves forming sets and runs to reach a predetermined point target, usually 500 points.
How is 500 Rummy played? In 500 Rummy, players aim to create valid combinations of sets and runs using their cards. A set consists of three or more cards of the same rank, and a run comprises three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. Players draw a card from the stockpile or the discard pile and then discard a card to maintain their hand. The goal is to be the first to reach the target score, often 500 points.
What are the unique rules of 500 Rummy? One of the distinctive features of 500 Rummy is the concept of "melding," where players can lay down combinations of sets and runs on the table in specific rounds. Another key rule is the requirement for a minimum point value to open the game, which ensures players have a certain level of valid combinations before they can lay down melds.
How is scoring done in 500 Rummy? Scoring in 500 Rummy can be intricate. Each card has a point value: face cards are usually worth 10 points, aces are worth 1 point, and numbered cards retain their face value. Points are tallied at the end of each round based on the unmelded cards left in players' hands. The first player to reach the target score (often 500 points) wins the game.
Can 500 Rummy be played with different numbers of players? Yes, 500 Rummy can be played with a range of players, from two to eight. However, the game's dynamics change with different player counts, affecting strategy and gameplay. Certain variations of the game may be better suited for specific player numbers, so it's essential to choose a version that accommodates your group.
