If you are just starting out in poker then you will quite likely come across a barrage of poker terms that would possibly sound confusing to you at the first go. One such term is that of open ended straight flush draw. But, don’t you worry because in this post we have explained the basic contextual meaning and the strategy for playing open ended straight flush draws in poker.

What does the term open ended straight flush draw mean in poker?

An open ended straight flush draw otherwise abbreviated as OESFD is a poker draw that basically combines the strength of a straight draw with a flush draw. A player is said to be holding a straight draw when he has 4 cards in sequential order and needs just 1 more card to make a straight draw. Conversely, a player is said to be holding a flush draw when he has 4 cards of the same suit and needs just one more to complete a flush.

In other words, if in a game of poker, a player holds an open ended straight flush draw then this simply means he has a number of outs for making a straight, flush and even a straight flush. But then what is an out in poker? Well, an out is a poker term that is often used to refer to unseen cards which when drawn can help a player improve his hand to one that is likely to win.

Generally speaking, a player with an open ended straight flush draw can make a straight with 6 possible cards and a flush with 9 possible cards. However, that’s not all a player with an open ended straight flush draw can also hit a straight flush with 2 possible cards.

Now, let us understand the concept of an open ended straight flush draw more accurately with a short example.  For instance – you are playing a game of standard Texas Holdem wherein you have been dealt a 9 of diamonds and 10 of diamonds. The flop round comes and 3 cards namely – 8 of diamonds, 7 of diamonds and 2 of spades are dealt face up. Thereafter, the turn card is dealt which shows a 2 of clubs. Here, if you observe closely you are basically holding an open ended straight flush draw. How? Because in the above situation, you hold straight draw outs, flush draw outs as well as the straight flush draw outs.

Open ended straight flush draw strategy

We assume by now you must have understood what an OESFD implies in the poker world. Moving forward, let us now discuss the open ended straight flush draw strategy. Not many people realise, but the OESFD is actually one of the most powerful hands in poker. With a strong equity on the flop round, the open ended straight flush draw must be played as aggressively as possible especially if you can anticipate a decent number of folds against your draw.

Vital to this, since you can always expect to hit a straight flush with an open ended straight flush draw you must prepare to semi-bluff with this draw if the situation so demands. At max, even if you get called out, you hold a decent chance of hitting a straight, flush or even a straight flush during the river round.

As with most things in the poker world, there is no standard strategy for playing and winning with an OESFD. The least you can do is hone your open ended straight flush draw skills by playing different variants of poker.
