What are some key Hold'em Texas poker rules?

When it comes to poker rules, Texas Hold'em is quite easy to understand. Here’s what you need to keep in mind:

1)      In Hold'em poker, every player is dealt two cards, otherwise known as hole cards, that are only for their eyes.

2)      The dealer in the game spreads 5 community cards, face up - three at once, then another, and then another to form the board.

3)      All players in the game can use these shared community cards in conjunction with their own hole cards to make the best possible five-card poker hand. In Hold'em Texas poker, a player may use any combination of the seven cards (hole cards + community cards) available to make the best possible five-card poker hand.

4)      Before and after each community card is revealed at a Texas Hold'em poker game, the players take turns to bet.

5)      The best 5-card combination finally wins the pot or the total sum of money that is waged during a single game of Hold'em poker.

What are the 3 major variations of Hold'em Texas Poker?

Before learning how to play Texas Hold'em, you need to understand the three major variations of Texas Hold'em poker. These variations are usually distinguished from each other by their betting limits:

1)   Limit Texas Hold'em - In this variation, the sizes of the bets are pre-determined by the rules of the game. Since Hold'em Texas poker takes place over 4 betting rounds, as per standard rules, the size of the bets during the first two rounds is usually half the size of the bets placed during the final two rounds.

2)   No-limit Texas Hold'em – In this variation, the player is free to bet any amount, and even go to the extent of betting all of their chips. The lower limit in No-limit Texas Hold'em varies from one gaming venue to the other.

3)   Pot Texas Hold'em – In this variation of Hold'em Texas poker, the size of the bet is usually limited by the size of the pot. The lower limit for Pot Texas holds em is based on the amount in the pot (that is, the amount or chips collected during a single game). Players generally have the option to raise or bet as per the size of the pot but no more than that. For instance – If it is your time to bet and the pot contains ₹150. Then, you can bet as little or as high as you like, as long as the latter doesn’t exceed the pot amount. Any bet in between the lower and upper limit is a legal bet.

How to play Texas Hold'em?

To begin a game of Hold'em Texas poker, you first need chips. The same will be allotted to you automatically once you put out the small and big blinds. So, let us first understand what are blinds:

The Blinds

The first step in Hold'em Texas poker, is to put out the blinds. Now, there are basically two blinds in Texas hold em- a big blind (a minimum bet required to play the game) and a small blind (that is normally half the value of the big blind). These bets or blinds basically exist as baseline costs to participate in the game and are placed before the hole cards are received. Thereafter, since you are playing online, once you place the blinds, the chips will be provided to you in each denomination automatically to allow the game to run smoothly. You are now ready to begin the game.

Player betting options in Hold'em Texas poker

As soon as you receive the chips, you will simultaneously be given two cards that function as your hold cards. You can use them to make your 5-card poker hand. A round of Texas Hold'em usually consists of 4 betting rounds followed by a showdown, explained in detail in the following sections:

Once you receive your hole card, you are now in the pre-flop betting round. Now, it is time for you to look at your cards and decide the next course of action based on your hole cards. A player playing Hold'em Texas Poker usually has three options – to fold, call or raise.

·         Call – This means you want to match the amount of the big blind

·         Raise – This means that you are raising the bet by doubling the amount of the big blind

·         Fold – This means that you want to pay nothing to the pot and throw away the hand. In other words, you become ineligible to win the current game.

If you decide to call or raise, then you will proceed to the next betting rounds.

Once the pre-flop Texas Hold'em round ends, the flop is dealt. In this step of Hold'em Texas poker, three cards are dealt face-up on the board. Basically, in Texas hold em, the three cards that are on the flop are community cards. They can thus be used by any player to make their best 5-card poker hand. The betting options in flop rounds are generally similar to pre-flop. Though, in this round, the player has the option to check as well. This means that they can pass the action onto the next player according to the holdem Texas poker rules.

Once the betting round on the flop completes, the turn or the fourth community card is thereafter dealt face-up on the board. Again, players have the option to check, call, fold, or raise. In case you are learning how to play Texas Hold'em (and are playing the limit version), the size of the initial bet will be doubled for this and the final round. For instance – If the initial big blind amount was ₹150, then the same will be raised to ₹300 in this round. Thereafter, to call, a person will have to bet ₹300 only. Similarly, to raise, the amount will be ₹600.

After the turn round ends, finally, the fifth street or the last community card is dealt face-up on the board. The betting rules are broadly applied the same way as in case of flop and turn. This is also the final betting round and no more cards will be dealt further in the game.

We are finally at the last step of learning how to play Texas Hold'em. Once the river betting round has been completed, the players now enter the showdown. At this point the player with the best five-card poker wins the pot. The best 5-card hand combination is usually determined based on the official poker hand rankings.

With this, the pot is awarded and the round of Texas Hold'em finally comes to an end.
