The poker straight is one of the highest hand combinations in a game of poker. This hand combination is made up of 5 five which are in a sequence. The highest possible poker straight is made up of the cards of rank 10 (10), Jack (J), Queen (Q), King (K) and Ace (A). This particular hand combination also goes by the name of Broadway. The lowest possible poker straight is made up of the cards of rank Ace (A), rank 2 (2), rank 3 (3), rank 4 (4) and rank 5 (5). This particular hand combination also goes by the names of the wheel or the bicycle. When talking about the poker straight, the word straight denotes that all 5 cards in that hand combination are in a straight sequence. Although the suit does not matter when looking at the ranking a poker straight, all pokers straights are very different. We can differentiate between different poker straights by looking at the card denominations and card rankings. The strength of a poker straight is determined by its highest card and then its second highest card and so on.
When we try to compare a poker straight to all the other hand combinations, we notice that the poker straight is the fifth highest hand combination. The poker straight comes right under the flush and right above the three of a kind. The flush, in poker, is the hand combination that ranks fourth. All 5 cards are expected to have the same suit in this hand combination. A hand combination consisting, for example, of cards of rank 10, rank 4, rank 8, rank 2 and rank 7, all spades, is called a flush. The three of a kind, in poker, is the hand combination that ranks 7th. In this combination of hands, 3 out of 5 cards are expected to have the same rank. The suit does not matter in this combination of hands. For instance, a hand combination consisting of rank 5, rank 5, rank 5, rank 2 and rank 8 cards is recognized as a Three of a Kind.
