It is believed to have originated in the Indian subcontinent though under a different name. It is said to be invented by the Indian Maharajas. Most likely it was adapted by the Maharajas from the street-style version of carrom existing at that time. One carrom board with a glass surface is still available in a palace in Patiala, India.
The word “carrom” probably originated from Timor in southeast Asia. From there, the word travelled with the Portuguese to India.
Carrom was also the name of a delicious fruit (star fruit).
Slowly, by the late eighteenth century, the English speaking world became familiar with the word ‘carrom’ in the context of the game of “carrom billiards” which is a game played on a snooker type table without pockets.
With the passage of time, ‘carrom’ became more common in English usage, due to the growing popularity of billiards.
Carrom has survived in its various forms for thousands of years till the present day because it is an easily adaptable game. Carrom game has different styles of play to suit the needs of the players.

In India, The International Carrom Federation(ICF) was formed in Chennai, India in 1988 and the formal rules for the Indian version of the carrom game were also published in the same year.
Now, the carrom game has become popular in South Asia, Arabia, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain. It is gaining popularity in the west also. Regular organized tournaments are being held in India and other parts of the world.
