Solid ball in pool is a popular American pocket-billiards game. The eight-ball game is also known as stripes & solids, 8-balls, solids and stripes, spots and stripes, or highs and lows. It is played on a billiard table with six pockets, cue sticks, and sixteen balls: a white cue ball and fifteen consecutively numbered object balls.

The object balls include:

  • Seven solid-colored balls numbered 1 through 7.
  • Seven striped balls numbered 9 through 15.
  • The black eight ball.

As soon as the balls are scattered with an opening break shot, the player is assigned either the group of solid or striped balls once they have properly pocketed a ball from that group. In this game of stripes 8 ball, the object is to legally pocket the 8-ball in a ‘called’ pocket. It can only be done once all balls from a player’s assigned group have been removed from the table.

The game of solid and striped ball originated around 1900 in the United States as a variation of pyramid pool, which allows any eight of fifteen object balls to be pocketed to win. Two modifications were made to the original game: the 8-numbered ball must be pocketed last to win, and only half of the other object balls can be pocketed by each player.

The solid 8 ball game is the second most played professional pool game, after nine-ball.

Balls in the stripes in 8 ball

There are 15 balls, numbered from 1 to 15. The balls 1 through 7 are solid colors; 9 through 15 are white with a single thick stripe in various colors, and the 8-numbered ball is black. At the beginning of the 8 ball stripes and solids game, the balls are stacked in a pyramid, with the number 8 at the center. The choice of groups is not made until a ball is legally pocketed; one side plays numbers 1 to 7, while the other plays numbers 9 to 15.

The object balls are placed in a triangular rack to start the game of 8 ball stripes. Located on the foot spot of the pool table, the apex ball of the rack is parallel to the end rail of the rack (the short end of the pool table). The balls in pool ball stripes and solids are arranged in the rack in such a way that they are all in contact with one another. It is accomplished by pressing the balls together toward the apex ball. The order of the balls can be random, with the exception of the 8-numbered ball. It must be placed in the center of the rack (i.e., the middle of the third row), and the two back corner balls, one of which must be a stripe and the other a solid. The cue ball can be placed anywhere the breaker desires behind the head string.

Pool stripes and solids rules

Question Answer
What are Stripes and Solids in pool? In pool, "Stripes" and "Solids" refer to the two main groups of balls on the table. Each group consists of seven colored balls, and the cue ball is the white ball.
How do I determine whether I play Stripes or Solids? The determination of playing Stripes or Solids is made at the beginning of the game. Each player takes a shot, and if they pocket a ball, they belong to that group. If a player pockets a solid ball, they play Solids, and if they pocket a striped ball, they play Stripes.
What happens if a player pockets a ball from both groups on the break? If a player pockets at least one ball from each group (Stripes and Solids) on the break, they get to choose which group they want to play for the remainder of the game.
Can I pocket any ball on the table after determining my group (Stripes or Solids)? After determining your group, you must pocket only the balls from that group until all your group's balls are pocketed. Then, you can pocket the 8-ball to win the game.
What is the objective of the game with Stripes and Solids? The goal is to pocket all the balls from your designated group (Stripes or Solids) and then pocket the 8-ball to win. However, if you pocket the 8-ball before your designated group's balls, you lose the game.
