What is Knocking in Hollywood Rummy?

Hollywood rummy is a variation of rummy that is similar to gin rummy. This rummy game is played between two players with a standard deck of 52 cards. The aim of this game is to collect sets of three or four of a kind or three or more consecutive cards of the same suit to earn points. There are several rounds in this game.

Hollywood Rummy- Rules of it!

Hollywood rummy is played between two players with a standard deck of cards. All face cards carry 10 points, the aces carry 1 point each and all the other numbered cards carry points equal to their face value.

At the start of each round, each player is dealt 10 cards, the remaining cards are placed face down forming the draw pile and the topmost card is placed face-up. The first player has to pick a card from the draw pile and discard one of the cards from their hand. Each player takes turns in doing the same and the game goes on.

The game continues until one of the players is left with 10 or fewer points. The round can also end when a player ‘knocks’. This can be done on any turn, after drawing, or before discarding. A player can knock when he can form sets, then he discards one card and has fewer points.

After knocking and discarding, the knocker has to spread all his cards on the table face-up. After the knocking, points are calculated. If the knocker has fewer points than his opponents, he scores. If he ends up with equal or more points than his opponents, he is weakened and the opponent scores the difference between the points.

If a player knocks with zero points in hand, it is referred to as the player going gin. In this case, a 20 point bonus is added to the point difference between the knocker and the opponent, and the whole points are awarded to the knocker. The game stops when a player reaches 100 points but continues until the player reaches 100 points in all three rounds.

Scoring Parameters

Hollywood rummy is played in three rounds and each round is scored separately. When a player wins the first round, the scores are mentioned as the first round scores. On winning the second, the scores are added to the first round scores, on winning the third round the scores are added to both first and second-round scores.

For example, if you win the first round with 20 points, this is your first-round score. On winning the second round with 10 points, these 10 points will be added to the score of the first round. If you win the third round by 30 points, these will be added to both the first and second-round scores. So, your final scores for all three rounds will be 60/40/30.

What is Knocking in Hollywood Rummy?

Any player of the game can ‘knock’ at any point of the game if they want to discard a card for forming sets. The round ends when a player ‘knocks’. This can be done on any turn, after drawing or before discarding. A player can knock when he can form sets, then he discards one card and has fewer points.

If the knocker has fewer points than his opponents, he scores. If he ends up with equal or more points than his opponents, he is weakened and the opponent scores the difference between the points.

Knocking is not a necessity, and it completely depends on your strategy of playing the game.
