List of Bowlers with Most Wickets in a Single ODI

1. Chaminda Vaas - 8/19

At the first spot with the most wickets in single ODI match, we have the legendary left-arm fast-medium bowler from the Sri Lankan side, Chaminda Vaas. Vaas is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the ODI cricket format of all time and he has also claimed the most wickets ever taken in a single game of One-Day Internationals. Vaas made this phenomenal record against Zimbabwe on December 8th 2001 in Colombo (S.S.C).

With his first ball that day, he took out Dion Ebrahim and scored a hat-trick during his sixth-over bowling. In that game, Vaas bowled for a total of 8 overs with 3 maidens and claimed an unparalleled total of 8 wickets for just 19 runs, with an economy rate of 2.37. Vaas remains the only player to claim 8 wickets in a single ODI game of cricket of all time. Vaas made his ODI debut back against India at Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground on February 15th 1994 and went on to play a total of 322 ODI matches and picked up 400 wickets with a BBM of 8/19 and an economy rate of 4.19.

2. Shahid Afridi - 7/12

Former Pakistani bowling allrounder, Shahid Afridi is very well known for his impeccable wicket-drawing skills and run-scoring ability in the ODI cricket format. He is also a player on the list who has claimed the second-most wickets in single ODI match. He pulled off this feat during a match against West Indies at Providence on July 14th 2013.

In this match, Afridi bowled for 9 overs in which he dismissed 7 West Indian batsmen for a mere 12 runs. In these 9 overs, he had 3 maidens along with an impressive economy rate of 1.33. His 7/12 bowling figure in this game is truly a splendid work of art. Afridi made his debut in ODI on October 2nd 1996 against Kenya and went on to play a total of 398 ODI matches, where he claimed a total of 395 wickets and made 8064 runs.

3. Glenn McGrath - 7/15

Australian right-arm fast-medium bowler Glenn McGrath, who is responsible for 381 wickets in 250 ODI matches and 563 wickets in 124 Test matches, is in the third spot for claiming one of the most wickets in single ODI match. This took place during a matchup against Namibia at Potchefstroom on February 27th 2003. In this One-Day International match, McGrath handled 7 overs with his bowling, which caused mayhem for his opposition that day.

He made 4 maidens and swiped 7 wickets for 15 runs with an economy rate of 2.14. With this striking 7/15 bowling figure in a single ODI match, McGrath has sealed his name among the top players who have achieved this milestone, and this is also the highest from the Australian side. McGrath also ranks fourteenth in the list of most wickets in an ODI series with 27/422.

4. Rashid Khan - 7/18

Bowling allrounder Rashid Khan for the Afghanistan cricket team takes up the fourth spot in the list of most wickets in single ODI match. He reached this milestone very recently and this happened during an ODI game against West Indies at Gros Islet on June 9th 2017.

In this match, Rashid Khan took charge of bowling for 8.4 overs, where he claimed 7 wickets for just 18 runs with a single maiden and an economy rate of 2.07. He is also the top player from Afghanistan with the most wickets in single ODI match.

5. AJ Bichel - 7/20

The fifth player on this list to take one of the most wickets in single ODI match is none other than Australia’s Andy Bichel. He made this wonderful record during a match against England at the Gqeberha, which was played on March 2nd 2003. In this ODI game, Bichel bowled a total of 10 overs, in which he claimed 7 wickets for just 20 runs with an impressive economy rate of 2.00.

Bichel was the first player in Australia to get 7 wickets in a single ODI game, a record which was matched and overtaken in terms of runs conceded by another Australian cricketer, McGrath, four months later.
