 Waqar Younis

Former Pakistani cricketer and right-arm fast bowler, Waqar Younis is the player with the fastest 400 wickets in ODI of all time. Younis was a magnificent player and was heavily regarded among the top fast bowlers in the world of cricket of all time. He made several records in cricket and reached multiple milestones with his brilliant bowling. His genius deliveries of yorkers and bouncers always kept the batsmen on the edge.

He made his ODI debut with Pakistan against West Indies back in on 14th October 1989 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. And nearly 13 years and 55 days later, during his 252nd ODI game against South Africa at the Durban on 8th December 2002, Younis claimed his ODI career’s 400th wicket. This is one of the most phenomenal bowling milestones in One Day Internationals, that has ever been achieved. Alongside this, Younis created a milestone of reaching the fastest 400 wickets in ODI in the world, in just 252 matches. Younis went on to play ten more ODI matches after this for Pakistan, concluding his career bowling summary with 262 total ODI matches played, 416 wickets claimed, BBM of 7/36, an economy rate of 4.69 and thirteen 5-wickets draw in an innings.

2. Muttiah Muralitharan - 263 Matches

Muttiah Muralitharan

At the second number in the list of players who have reached the milestone of fastest 400 wickets in ODI, we have our world cricket legend, the former Sri Lankan right-arm off-break bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan. This magnificent spinner currently stands at the top of multiple bowling records and achievements with his impeccable career performance and statistics. His debut ODI game was against India on 12th August 1993, at the R. Premadasa Stadium. And after 12 years 165 days since his debut ODI match, Muralitharan reached the milestone of 400 wickets taken in One-Day Internationals.

It was during his 263rd ODI match against South Africa at Adelaide on 24th January 2006, that he reached this outstanding feat of one of the fastest 400 wickets in ODI, by claiming the wickets of Johan Van der Wath and Graeme Smith. Muralitharan went on further to play numerous other matches with Sri Lanka and concluded a magnificent bowling career. He played 350 ODI matches in his career and claimed 534 total wickets with a BBM of 7/30, and an economy rate of 3.93. Muralitharan currently holds the top spot as both the highest wicket-taker in ODI cricket of all time (534) and the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket of all time (800), two records that are far away from being matched for many years to come.

3. Wasim Akram - 285 Matches

Wasim Akram

The third player to reach the milestone of fastest 400 wickets in ODI is a former Pakistani bowling allrounder, Wasim Akram. Before Waqar Younis’ record, Akram was the first Pakistani cricketer with the record of fastest to 400 ODI wickets. He was a left-arm fast bowler for his team and started his ODI debut back on 24th November 1984, playing against team New Zealand at the Iqbal Stadium. Since then, Akram participated in plenty of ODI, as well as Test cricket matches, representing Pakistan with his remarkable fast bowling skills.

Since his initial ODI debut, it took him 15 years and 57 days to reach the milestone of his career’s 400th ODI wicket. It happened during a match against Australia in Sydney on 19th January 2000. This was his 285th ODI match, where he claimed 3 wickets by just conceding 40 runs. With this, Wasim Akram became the fastest to 400 ODI wickets at that time and he currently stands at the third spot for reaching the fastest 400 wickets in ODI in cricket of all time. In his career, he played a total of 356 ODI matches, with 502 wickets to his name, a BBM of 5/15 and an economy rate of 3.9. He is the second-highest wicket-taker in the ODI format, right after the Muttiah Muralitharan.

4. Chaminda Vaas - 332 Matches

Chaminda Vas

The fourth-highest wicket-taker in ODI cricket of all time, Chaminda Vaas, is also one of the fastest to 400 ODI wickets. Chaminda Vaas was a left-arm fast-medium bowler for Sri Lanka, who began his ODI cricket career against team India back on 15th February 1994 at the Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground. Since then, he participated in numerous matches and was responsible for tons of Sri Lankan victories. After 14 years and 194 days since his international One-Day debut, Vaas was playing his 332nd ODI match against Team India in Colombo on 27th August 2008. In this match, he took the wicket of Yuvraj Singh and dismissed him for a duck. He ended the match with 1/40, which contributed to his ODI career’s 400th wicket.

This match was also Vaas’ last ODI game, through which he concluded his beautiful and very productive bowling journey with 400 wickets in 322 ODI matches, a BBM of 8/19 and an economy rate of 4.19. Vaas is the fourth-highest wicket-taker and the fourth bowler to reach the fastest 400 wickets in ODI cricket of all time. He is, without any doubt, one of the best bowlers in the world of cricket from Sri Lanka, of all time.
