The IPL is one of the biggest sporting leagues in the world with fifteen successful seasons being held to date. Let us have a look at every IPL first match and reminisce the great moments. This article includes the first match of all IPL seasons, starting from the first to the latest edition of the league.

A Brief About the First Match of Every IPL Season

Here is the list of IPL all-season first match results from 2008 to 2022 and their respective brief details:

1. RCB vs KKR - IPL 2008

The first-ever IPL match of all time was played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore during the inaugural year of Indian Premier League 2008. Following the opening ceremony, RCB won the toss and decided to field first. RCB’s Praveen Kumar bowled the first over and KKR’s iconic opener Brendon McCullum made 158 runs out of 73 deliveries with 13 sixes and 10 fours. The bars for the league were set high from the get-go but team RCB were all out at 82 runs, losing the game by a margin of 140 runs to KKR.

The second season of the league was held in South Africa and the opening match was played between the two rival clubs, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. MI’s Sachin Tendulkar stood victorious with his 59 not-out scores, helping the team total to get to 165/7. While chasing the target, Dhoni-led CSK was shut down at 146/7, losing the 20-over game by 19 runs to Mumbai Indians. Sachin Tendulkar was declared the man of the match of the first IPL 2009 game.

Once again, Kolkata Knight Riders were playing the opening match and this time it was against Deccan Chargers, during the third IPL season back in 2010. KKR batted first and raised an impressive total of 161/4 with the contribution of 65 runs not out by Angelo Mathews. Defending champions DC were however 11 runs short and lost the match to KKR by ending their run-haul at 150/7. This match is regarded as the best first match of all IPL seasons.

Playing in the opening match for the third time, Kolkata Knight Riders were up against Chennai Super Kings this time, during the fourth season of IPL (2011). Defending champions CSK took the responsibility of batting first and raised a target of 154 runs for the opposition to chase. KKR was, however, equally impressive but they came 2 runs short and with the final scoreline reading 151/7 runs, they lost against CSK.

After their clash in the opening match of the second season of the league, the rivals Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians once again met to start off the fifth season of IPL, back in 2012. CSK came on the crease to bat first but was severely restricted to a mere total of 112 runs with the loss of all wickets. MI was able to chase target quite easily and ended up scoring 115/2 by 16.5 over. MI’s Richard Levi was declared the player of the match.

Continuing the custom of playing in the opening match, KKR secured the spot in the first match of IPL 2013 as the defending champions. They were up against Delhi Daredevils, who raised a target of 129 runs for their rivals to chase down. Except for the early dismissal of M. Bisla, KKR didn’t face any severe issues and attained the target with the loss of 4 wickets by the 18.4 over. With 6 wickets and 8 balls remaining, KKR had won the opening match of the sixth IPL season.

The league favorites, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders were facing each other in the opening match of the seventh IPL season. With the massive contribution of 72 runs from Jacques Kallis, KKR raised a total of 163/5. MI had a hard time chasing the target while facing the brilliance of KKR’s bowling and fielding. MI was shut down at 122/7 and lost the match by 41 runs to KKR and Kallis was named the MVP. This game out of every first match of all IPL seasons is a very significant one.

However, KKR was able to chase the target at the mark of 18.3 over by scoring 170/3 and G. Gambhir’s 57-run contribution was a huge part of it.

Season 9 opening game was a very major event out of every first match of all IPL seasons that has ever been played. In this game, Mumbai Indians were facing off Rising Pune Supergiants. MI started off with a scoreline of 121 runs with the loss of 8 wickets. Chasing the target of 122 runs in 20 overs was not a problem for RPS at all. They managed to score 126 runs with the loss of 1 wicket in 14.4 overs, winning the match by 9 wickets with 32 remaining balls.

The opening match of season 10 of IPL was played between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore. SRH took the strike first and scored a massive total of 207/4, with the contribution of Yuvraj Singh's 62 runs and Moises Henriques’ 52 runs. On the other hand, RCB was all out for 172 runs during the final over of the game. SRH won the first match of that season by 35 runs and Yuvraj Singh was given the player of the match title.

The IPL giants, Mumbai Indians, and Chennai Super Kings were once again facing off each other at the first match of the league, this time in season 11. MI batted first and scored 165/4 by the end of their innings. CSK’s batting was matched with the furious bowling from MI’s side and the game was very close. With Dwayne Bravo’s contribution of 68 runs in 30 balls, CSK was able to make 169 runs with the loss of 9 wickets. CSK won the first match of the IPL 2018 season by 1 wicket with 1 ball remaining. This match is popularly said to be the most nail-clenching one out of all IPL opening matches.

The opening match of the IPL 2019 season between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings, will always be remembered. RCB were first to bat and CSK restricted their play for just 70 runs with the loss of all wickets. With the target of 71 runs, it took CSK 17.4 overs to reach the mark with the loss of 3 wickets. CSK won the match by 7 wickets, however, the game was too one-sided at times.RCB’s 70 runs all out has been the lowest among all IPL first match results.

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians met at the opening match of the IPL for the fourth time, and it was during season 13. MI batted first and set a target of 163 runs to be chased by the opposition. And with the contribution of 58 runs not out by Faf du Plessis and 71 runs by Ambati Rayudu, CSK managed to score 166/5 with 4 balls remaining in the final over. CSK won the first match of season 13 by 5 wickets against MI.

The first match of season 14 of IPL was played between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. MI set a target of 160 runs in 20 overs that RCB managed to reach by the very last ball of the final over. 15. CSK vs KKR - IPL 2022

The very first match of IPL season 15 was scheduled between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. The first team to bat was CSK and they raised a total of 131/5 in twenty overs, with the massive contribution of 50 runs not out by MS Dhoni. However, KKR was able to catch up to the target by 18.3 over with a scoreline of 133/4. Kolkata Knight Riders had won the game by 6 wickets with 9 balls to spare and Umesh Yadav was declared the player of the match. The 2022 opening match is stated to be the best one out of every first match of all IPL seasons.
