What is blitz chess?

Blitz chess (also known as speed chess) is a type of chess that is played in a short amount of time. Speed chess is entertaining to see and play. It's been stated that the faster the time limit, the worse the game's quality. This may be true, but the adrenaline that comes from playing or watching fast-paced games is hard to duplicate. Speed chess is defined by pre-moves, unique and eccentric openings, mistakes, and other nonsense.

Blitz strategy: how to win at blitz chess?

Here are some of the most popular blitz strategies that can help chess players level up their game:

  1. In over-the-board tournaments, competitors must play 120/0 or 60/0 timed chess for each side. Your brain is adjusting to this new time frame psychologically. In quick time controls, playing aggressively causes your higher opponents to think at a faster rate, something they may not be comfortable with.
  2. Sacrificing a pawn in a 3/0 or 5/0 game has no effect on the game's outcome. The goal is to receive a fair amount of remuneration (such as active play, minor threats, doubled pawns, weak king, etc.).
  3. When you're short on time or material, pre-move your king back and forth or on dark or light squares, and sacrifice your pieces to check your opponent if they're short on time or if you're both short on time. This is also applicable to bullet chess. If your opponent has a light-squared bishop, simply move your king into dark squares and keep your pieces away from his camp.
  4. Players should make non-critical decisions quickly. It may seem apparent, yet many blitz chess players ponder a decision for 20 seconds or play at a sluggish speed until they realize they must pre-move the rest of the game! It's crucial to compute quickly, but only when it's really necessary. Using those precious seconds to double-check a crucial line with some complicated strategies could determine the outcome of a game later on!
  5. Players should have an understanding of chess openings. In blitz chess, opening knowledge is really beneficial. It's easy to get a time advantage if you can perform 10-15 movements automatically while your opponent has to ponder. Knowing the strategic middlegame plans linked with each of your openers is a great benefit as well, beyond the rote memorization aspect of the game. In blitz chess, you should concentrate your time calculating different moves rather than high-level planning because you won't have to come up with strategies in the early middle game because you already know them.

Tips: how to win at blitz chess?

We have curated a list of some of the best and most effective tips for answering your question of how to win at blitz chess.

  1. Apply the consecutive move strategy: During your opponent's turn, seek the position's motives (which will take some practice) and rapidly determine your possibilities. Decide whether to go for something predictable or generic after learning the various moves. Don't just stop there after you've made your move! Find alternate ideas that aren't as decisive as your current one, but are firm enough to prevent you from making concessions. Instead of re-analyzing the situation and making another decision after the opponent has had their turn, quickly execute the sequence of actions you planned ahead of time. Only pause to consider the conditions across the board when something truly big occurs (sacrifice, threats, attacks, etc.) and then continue with your plan until the anomalies are resolved.
  2. Repeat moves: Repeating moves doesn't make much sense where the element of time is considerably more tolerant. This is because the opponent has all the time in the world to come up with a counter-move that will either reverse or strengthen their position. In blitz, however, this is not the case. When you're under a lot of time constraints, getting the move out maybe more crucial than what's on the board. With it, you might possibly gain time to think and possibly make your opponent believe you want to draw, but you can use the time to locate a solid move, continue, and win. Make it a habit to do so.
  3. Limit premoves: In online chess, pre-moving is a coordinate function that ensures the pre-moved piece or pawn is in place immediately after the opponent's turn ends. Chess players believe that this is an effective strategy to speed up their games. They are correct, but not in the way that you believe. The player who enjoys pre-moving their pieces or pawns the most is nearly invariably the one who makes the most mistakes. This isn't an issue in bullets because neither player has a lot of time to figure out what's going on. However, because this is a blitz game, you have more time, which gives your opponent more opportunity to respond if something suspicious arises. If you really want to pre-move that much then limit it when doing pawn promotions where nothing crazy should happen.
  4. Don’t play when in a losing streak: You may argue that this principle applies to all types of chess, not just blitz chess, and you'd be correct. However, because blitz chess is a fast-paced format, participants are more likely to lose streaks. What are their responsibilities? They continue to play blitz chess even when emotionally drained after previous losses. What has happened is that they have brought their failing mindsets into current games, which is a recipe for disaster.
  5. Sac a pawn: In blitz chess, it's a good idea to give up a pawn in exchange for some form of a positional or strategic initiative. It's just a pawn, but unlike in classical (longest time control) where the sac is important, the positional advantage that comes with it is far more valuable than a single pawn. In blitz chess, having a pawn down doesn't change the game nearly as much, so don't hesitate to do so if it's reasonable.
  6. Play positional chess: Positional chess entails gradual maneuvering moves aimed at improving long-term advantages (strategy) rather than short-term gains (tactics). However, the attitude will always be different depending on the opponent, and against inferior players, being defensive is actually the greatest option.  Less experienced players always have the same style, which is aggressiveness while making poor decisions. When you play a tactical game against a weaker opponent, you're simply giving them a chance, because, in intricate situations, you're more prone to make mistakes. Play conventional movements rather than illogical ones, and make sure it's something simple enough that you can play quickly without squandering initiative. As the stronger player, you can wait for the weaker player to attack and make a mistake, then capitalize on it.
  7. Implement complicated chess: They will undoubtedly outplay you in this type of war, but the contrary may be more beneficial. Online chess games are transactional in nature and thus speedier, but over-the-board games are frequently more involved and continue for hours. A stronger player is more likely to be exposed to and employed in an over-the-board scenario with extended time constraints. Complicated positions make it more difficult to find moves, giving the stronger player more opportunities to deliberate longer.
  8. Match the opening with the rest of the game: The opening must complement the set of strategies you've prepared for a specific match. Choose a more complicated-based opening if you want a more complicated approach! This is especially important while playing white, as you'll be dictating most of the positional structure and hence this matters the most, but it can also be useful when playing black. Keeping one to three lines of openings in the quiet, semi-aggressive, and aggressive categories may be all you need to do well on occasion although studying a lot of openings has benefits.
  9. Learn basic opening traps: In blitz chess, tactics are in frenzy mode, and you don't want to be a victim right away! Falling for traps is a regular occurrence for both beginners and more experienced players, which is unfortunate because it can be avoided with proper trap knowledge. The idea is to avoid falling for the traps rather than using them. This alone would significantly improve your victory percentage, or at the very least the length of time, you stay in games, resulting in additional possibilities down the road.
  10. Use your pet line: A pet line is an opening branch that acts as a ‘go-to strategy’ against tougher opponents. A favorite line is a position in which a player is normally at ease, has a good understanding of, and can perform quite effectively. A deep and demanding opening repertoire may not be as vital versus more random opponents, but not against stronger opponents! Taking the time to come up with fresh ideas or venture into unfamiliar territory should be reserved for experiments rather than meaningful matches. Spending too much time thinking because of the unfamiliarity of the line, or even worse, falling for techniques and traps that could easily be avoided by just playing a favorite line, is simply too dangerous.
