Pool rummy is played between 2 to 6 players with one or two standard decks of cards, each containing 52 cards and 2 printed joker cards. The players can enter the game by each paying a certain amount of entry fee which is considered as the prize pool.
Each player is dealt a total of 13 cards and a toss is done to decide which player takes the first turn at the game. The first card from the deck is placed in the open deck which indicates that the game has started and the rest of the cards are placed face down in the closed deck.
A wild card joker is selected at the start of the game randomly, it can be any card from the suit which then acts as the wild card joker and can be used along with the printed joker to complete a sequence. If this randomly chosen joker turns out to be the printed joker then players can choose an ace card of any suit as wild card joker for that round of the game.
A player can drop at any point of the game and continue with other rounds. The dropped player will get some penalty points that are added to the final score. In the game of 101 pool rummy, the maximum points a player can accumulate are 101 points. Once a player reaches this limit, they are eliminated from the game.
The main objective of the game is to form sets and sequences with all the 13 cards dealt at the start of the game. To call a game, the player needs to have at least two formed sequences out of which one has to be a pure sequence. The players can use wild card joker cards and printed joker cards to form an impure sequence.
Both the 101 pool rummy and 201 pool rummy are quite similar to each other with a few major differences. The major difference between the 101 pool rummy game and 201 pool rummy game is the points.
In the 101 pool rummy game, the maximum points a player can accumulate are 101 points, whereas in the 201 pool rummy game, the maximum points a player can accumulate are 201 points. In 101 pool rummy game, a player gets eliminated from a round when they reach 101 points while in 201 pool rummy game, a player gets eliminated from a round when they reach a total of 201 points.
Another major difference between the 101 pool rummy game and the 201 pool rummy game is the number of penalty points that are added to the player’s score when they drop out of the pool rummy game. In 101 pool rummy, when a player drops out a total of 20 points penalty is applied at first drop and 40 point penalty is applied at middle drop. However, in the 201 pool rummy, a penalty of 25 is applicable at first drop and a total of 50 point penalty is applicable on the middle drop.
In the game of pool rummy the objective is to get the least amount of points. Hence, the winner of pool rummy gets zero points. Every other player gets points based on the cards in their hand. Each card carries a different amount of points.
All the face cards in the deck of playing cards, which are the Jack, the Queen and the King all carry 10 points each, the ace cards from all suits also carry 10 points each, the numbered cards carry points equal to the face value of the card. For example, a card numbered 6 carries 6 points, a card number 7 carries 7 points and so on.
If a player finishes the game without meeting the game’s objective, they get 80 points. If a player drops out they get penalty points depending on whether the drop was a first drop or a middle drop and whether the game played is 101 pool rummy or 201 pool rummy.
These penalty points that are accumulated by the player on dropping out, which are usually 20 or 40 points in case of 101 pool rummy and 25 or 50 points in case of 201 pool rummy are added to the player’s final score.
In the game of pool rummy, the maximum points a player can get depend on the type of pool rummy the player is playing. There are two types or formats in which pool rummy can be played. These are 101 pool rummy and 201 pool rummy games.
When a player is playing 101 pool rummy, the maximum points they can get are 101 points. Whenever a player reaches a total of 101 points in a round, the player is eliminated from the round.
When playing a 201 pool rummy game, the maximum points a player can get are 201 points. Whenever a player reaches a total of 201 points in the game, the player is eliminated from the round.
