How to Play the Oklahoma Rummy Game?

The Oklahoma rummy game is played between two to four players with a standard deck of cards containing 52 cards. The number of cards dealt depends on the number of players that are playing the game. If 2 players are playing, the number of cards dealt is 10 cards each, whereas if 3 or 4 players are playing, each player is dealt 7 cards.

The aim of the Oklahoma rummy game is similar to that of other rummy games, which is to get rid of all your cards as fast as possible by melding your cards and forming sets or sequences. Once you form a set or sequence, you have to lay down those cards on the table.

The sets or sequences are also formed in a manner similar to all the other rummy games. A set can be formed by melding 3 or 4 cards of the same value but of different suits or a sequence or run can be formed by melding consecutive cards of the same suit.

How to play Oklahoma Rummy

The game starts like any other game of rummy by randomly choosing the dealer. The play will start from the player at the left of the dealer and continue in a clockwise manner. The first player has to draw a card from the draw pile which is formed by the remaining cards that are placed face down on the center table. The player tries to create a meld by using the card from the draw pile. The player can also draw a card from the discard pile which is formed by placing the topmost card from the draw pile face up on the center table. After drawing a card, the player has to discard a card to the discard pile.

The game continues in this manner until one player is left with no cards in their hands. The remaining players who have cards left in their hands will then tally the points based on the cards left and put up a final score for each player. Obviously, the first player to get rid of all his cards will be the winner but it is still necessary to tally the points for all players, as the final score of each player will decide the rank they hold for that particular round of the Oklahoma rummy game.

At the end of each round, the final score is tallied and recorded and another round starts in a similar manner as the first one, only with a different dealer.

What is the Point System of Oklahoma Rummy?

The pointing system in Oklahoma rummy is a little different than some other variants of rummy. The playing cards each carry certain points that are counted at the end of each round.

The face cards which are the Jack, Queen, and King each carry 10 points, the Ace card in Oklahoma rummy is at the lowest value as it carries just one point, the number cards each carry points equal to their face value, for example, a card numbered 4 of any suit in the deck of playing cards carry 4 points, a card numbered 5 carries 5 points and so on.

In Oklahoma rummy the pointing system also depends on three different rules— Gin, Knock and Undercut. After a player lays down his cards, all players have to tally the points and record the final score. These scores are recorded at the end of each round and the maximum amount of points a player can reach is 100 points.

The player having maximum points at the end of the game is the winner. The game has to continue until at least one player reaches a total of 100 points. Additional rounds can be played until the target of 100 points is achieved.

What is Knocking in Oklahoma Rummy?

The round in Oklahoma rummy can end when a player “knocks”. This can be done during any turn, after drawing a card, or before discarding a card. A player in Oklahoma rummy usually knocks when they feel they can form a set or sequence followed by discarding a card and keeping sufficient points in hand.

The player has to discard a card after knocking and then organize all their cards by spreading them face up on the table. The other players do the same. The knocker’s points after knocking have to be 10 or less than 10. In this case alone, the knocker can get a bonus of 20 points, but if the knocker’s points are more than or equal to their opponents’ points, the difference between the knocker’s and the opponents’ points will be added to the opponents’ points.

Hence, in Oklahoma rummy, knocking is not required but it can increase the knocker’s winning chances if their points are 10 or less than 10. However, if the knocker’s points are more than or equal to their opponents’ points, it may leave the knocker in a weaker position as the difference between the points is added to the opponents’ points.

Rules of Oklahoma Rummy

The basic rules of Oklahoma rummy are mostly similar to the traditional rummy game and the gin rummy game. The game is played between 2 to 4 players with a standard deck of cards containing a total of 52 cards.

Each player is dealt a certain number of cards depending on the number of players that are playing the Oklahoma rummy game. If the game is being played between 2 players, each player is dealt 10 cards each, but when the game is being played in 3 or 4 players each player is dealt 7 cards.

Oklahoma rummy rules

The game begins like any other game of rummy. The dealer is randomly chosen at the start of the game. After the end of each round, the winner of that round becomes the dealer of the next round. The play begins with the player on the left of the dealer and then continues in a clockwise manner.

Apart from the cards dealt at the start of the game, all the other remaining cards are shuffled and placed face down on the center table as the draw pile. The topmost card from this pile is turned face up and placed on the center table as the discard pile. This topmost card that forms the discard pile is very important as it determines the maximum amount of points a player can have in his hand before knocking. For example, if it is a face card that carries 10 points, the player can knock with 10 or fewer points. If the card is an 8 card, the player can knock with 8 or fewer points.

Along with these basic rules, there are a few other details in the Oklahoma rummy. These are called Gin, Knock and Undercut.

  • Gin

Gin in Oklahoma rummy is when a player has melded their cards successfully and has formed sets and sequences with the cards. They then lay down these cards on the table and discard any remaining cards in the discard pile. The player can go “Gin” when they have no unmatched cards.

  • Knocking

Any round in Oklahoma rummy ends when a player knocks. This is done when the player thinks they have the ability to form a set or sequence followed by discarding a card and keeping sufficient points in hand. The player can knock at any turn but it should be done after drawing a card but before discarding a card. The maximum number of points the player can have in hand before knocking depends on the first card of the discard pile but it is usually 10 or less.

The knocker, after discarding a card, spreads out all his cards on the table; if he has no unmatched cards, it means the knocker has gone “Gin”. In this case the knocker gets a bonus of 20 points. However, if the knocker has points more than or equal to his opponents, the knocker is left in a weaker position as the difference between the points is added to the opponents’ score.

  • Undercut

If the knocker has not gone “Gin” and has points more than or equal to his opponent, the opponent can add melds in order to decrease the deadwood cards in their hands. When this happens, it means that the knocker is “undercut”. In such cases, the knocker gets a penalty of 25 points and the opponent earns a bonus of 10 points.
