The world best rummy player is Stu Ungar. Born in New York City, US, his full name was Stuart Errol Ungar (September 8, 1953 – November 22, 1998). He was also known by other nicknames- Stuey, The Kid, The Comeback Kid.

He was known as Comeback Kid after his victory in the 1997 World Series of Poker after a 16 years gap from his previous victory in 1981.

Stu Ungar was a brilliant child, having skipped his seventh class in school, and went directly to eighth. He learned the tricks of card games very early in life, in his father’s social club, Foxes Corner, and won his first gin rummy tournament at 10 years old.

Due to his father’s untimely death and his mother’s ill health, Stu Ungar had to drop out of school. To support his family, he started playing. He began winning tournaments frequently, getting $10,000 or more. By his early 20s, Stu had already become popular as a great rummy player in New York. In fact, opponents started refusing to play with Stu as they were afraid of losing.

Stu Ungar gin rummy was considered the best. He was so skilled that after moving to Las Vegas and having defeated other great gin rummy players it had a negative impact. Casinos refused to allow him to enter their premises as they lost out on other professional players who were afraid of losing. As opportunities for playing gin rummy reduced, Stu was forced to take up poker.

Stu won the World Series of Poker 3 times, in 1980, 1981, and 1997, therefore, becoming one of the only 2 players in the world to win the title 3 times.
