21 rummy is considered one of the most challenging versions of rummy. It originated from points rummy. Each round needs time, patience, and strategizing. If you are a beginner, then 21 card rummy may be a bit too difficult and we recommend that you start with the basic rummy card game.
21 card rummy is played by 2-6 players using 3 decks of 53 cards each (52+1 joker).
As the name says, 21 cards are dealt to each player. The 21 card rummy rules are quite similar to basic Rummy, especially with stock and discard pile, and picking and discarding cards. However, there are additional rules of Dublee, Tunnela, upper and lower jokers.
Also, in 21 rummy, the cards must be melded with specific rules to win a round.
Certain terms of 21 card rummy rules
Cut Jokers: After dealing the cards to all the players, the topmost card from the stock pile becomes the Cut Joker . For example, if 4♥ is the top card then, then 4 of all suits can be used as jokers to form sequences and sets.
Upper Joker: The card one rank above the Cut Joker and of the same suit as the Cut Joker is the Upper Joker. In our example, 5♥ is the Upper Joker
Lower Joker: Similarly the card of the same suit and one rank below the Cut Joker becomes the Lower Joker. In our example, 3♥ is the lower Joker.
Marriage: 1 Cut Joker, 1 Lower Joker and 1 Upper Joker all from the same suit is called a marriage. In our example, 4♥ is the cut joker then 3♥ 4♥ 5♥ forms a marriage. If you have a Marriage in hand, you get 100 points from each of the non-dropped players.
Dublee: A dublee is a pair of two matching cards of the same rank and suit or two Jokers. A joker cannot be used with another card to form a Dublee. For example: 5♦ 5♦ is a Dublee
Tunnela: A Tunnela is a set of three cards of the same rank and same suit. For example, 5♥ 5♥ 5♥. A Joker cannot be used with two other cards to form Tunnela.
In order to win a hand of 21 rummy, you must meld the cards in specific combinations. They are as follows-
1)At least three pure sequences (3 or more succeeding cards of the same suit without a Joker). The remaining cards can be arranged in any combinations of sets and runs.
2) Eight Jokers in one group. The rest of the cards are not required to be arranged in sets or sequences.
3) Eight dublees in separate groups. The rest of the cards are not required to be arranged in sets or sequences.
4) At least 3 tunnelas in separate groups. The rest of the cards are not required to be arranged in sets or sequences.
The winner gets the total of the points lost by all the losing players. The losing players get negative points.
Points of cards
For the losing player, the negative score is calculated based on the points for the ungrouped cards. There are following exceptions:
- If there is no pure sequence, then all cards are counted.
- If there are one or two pure sequence(s)- they are not counted
- If there are three pure sequences- then impure sequences/sets are also not added to the points
One can lose a maximum of 120 points in one hand.
Points of value cards
Points for marriage
1 marriage= 100
2 marriage= 300
3 marriage= 500
Drop Points Calculation
Points deducted for dropping (passing a turn) during the game as follows:-
Middle drop- 80
Apart from these points, each non-dropped player also receives positive scores for the value cards in hand and gets negative points for value cards held by other non-dropped players.
13 card rummy is similar to gin rummy whereas 21 card rummy game has originated from points rummy
- Number of cards is less in 13 card rummy
As the names suggest, there are 13 cards in 13 Cards Rummy and 21 in the other one. Thus 21 card rummy becomes more challenging.
- Number of decks is more in 21 card rummy game
21 card rummy game uses 3 decks however, 2 decks are used in 13 Cards Rummy
- Melding is easier in 13 rummy
In 13 Cards Rummy, you have to create 2 sequences out of which 1 must be pure. The other cards can be arranged in any groups of your choice. But, in 21 Cards Rummy, there are more specific types of combinations you have to form, thus making it more difficult.
- 21 cards is more complicated
21 card rummy has unique concepts such as cut joker, upper joker which are not in 13 rummy. Thus, 13 card rummy is suited for anyone starting to play rummy. In 13 rummy, there is only 1 joker.
