In card games such as poker, players set up hands of poker cards with respect to the rules, which obviously differ as per the variant of poker you play. These hands are compared to a poker hand ranking system that is generalized or is standard across all different types of poker. The player in possession of the highest-ranked hand wins that particular game in most poker games. However, there are many poker variants where the lowest hand wins the match. Hence it is very important to have a clear understanding of the ranking system of poker hands. This would come in extremely handy if you are a regular poker player, and plan on winning big money regularly. Here, we will talk about one of such hands - A baby straight in poker.
Straight in poker is when five cards of any suit are in sequence during the game. If there ever was a tie, the highest ranked card at the top of the sequence would always win. Further, the second, third, fourth, and fifth-highest ranking cards can be used to break the tie in the game moving forward. Two straights used in the game with the same high card are said to be of equal value, suits essentially cannot be used to separate or differentiate them. A straight with the highest card being a 10 is called a “straight to the ten” or “ten-high straight.”
A hand in poker such as 10, J, Q, K, A is supposed to be an ace-high straight (also called as Broadway or Royal Straight), and is ranked over a king-high straight such as 9, 10, J, Q, K. Here, the ace has been used as a high card. However, it can be used as a low card (having a value of one) in a five-high straight such as A, 2, 3, 4, 5, which is colloquially called as a wheel or Baby Straight in poker. In this case, the ace might not have wrapped around or played both high and low – which is not deemed to be a Straight. The reference of baby in poker usually signifies any of the four non-aces needed for the lowest possible hand (2,3,4,5) in a game. Therefore, a five-high straight (A-2-3-4-5) with the ace playing low is called a baby straight in poker.
