Table of content:

If you think that 2 people can’t play poker together, then it’s time to think again! There are many variants of poker that are suited to only 2 players. Some of the top ones that you can play online are:

War

War is a very simple and well-known card game that is played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards. It also goes by the name of Battle. In this game, each of the players is distributed an equal amount of cards, so each player gets one half of the deck. These cards are dealt to the players face down.

Once all the cards are dealt, the players are supposed to reveal their top most card. Both players have to reveal these cards at the same time. The player with the higher card gets to keep both those cards in a separate deck. The main aim of the game is to win all the cards as soon as possible.

In the event of there being a tie and both the players revealing the same card, there is a war. Both the players need to reveal another card. The player with the higher card wins both pairs of cards and keeps them in a separate deck. In this game, aces are considered to be the highest card and all the cards are taken at face value. Suits do not matter in this game.

There are very interesting variations of this game. Some of them are:

·         Casino war- This variation of the game is played in casinos and online platforms for money, making this game one of the best 2 player poker games.

·         Prisoners of war- This game can be played with more than 2 people. In this variation of the game, the cards that are won by a player are kept separately as prisoners of war and can be used when there is a war amongst 2 players.

·         Bettelmann- This is a German variation of the game. In this variation, instead of using a 52-card standard deck, a 32 card deck is used. The cards are segregated by color. One player gets the red cards and the other player gets the black cards. The game is played as standard from then on.

This game is regarded as one of the best 2 player poker card games.

Rummy

Rummy is a card game played by using a standard deck of 52 cards. This game can be played by 2 players and hence is known to be one of the best 2 player poker games. To win a game of Rummy, players need to make hand combinations with the cards they have been dealt.

These hand combinations include sets, three of a kind, four of a kind and straights with three cards or more. Both players are dealt 13 cards by the dealer. The rest of the cards are stacked up for the players to draw fresh cards from. One card is revealed face up in the center of the table. The players are supposed to discard unwanted cards and pick up a fresh card from the deck of undealt cards at every turn. Players can also draw cards from the discarded pile of cards.

Players have the option of discarding as many cards as they want and pick up as many fresh cards as they want. The only catch is that the number of cards in a player’s hand should be 13. The player to form the best hand combinations as compared to their opponents, wins the game.

Some variations of rummy are:

·         Rummoli Games- This variation of the game is played by using specially crafted tables. These crafted tables have specific squares on them with some cards to be put on them. At every turn, each player has to put a specific number of tokens on the squares. A player wins all the tokens of that square by putting down a card matching the card in the square.

·         Unique Cards- In this variation of rummy, instead of using a standard deck of 52 playing cards, special cards are used.

·         Tiles- This is a very famous variant of rummy. This variation is mostly played in china and goes by the name of Mahjong.

Blackjack

In this game, the player gets dealt 2 cards from the dealer. After this, the dealer deals themselves 2 cards. Out of these 2 cards, one of the cards is face up and the other card is face down. The main aim of this game is to reach a card total of 21. Players can draw additional cards to get as close as they can to that number.

All number cards are taken at face value. All face cards are valued at 10. Aces carry a value of either 11 or 1, depending on the hand. Once the players are done drawing cards, the dealer reveals their face down card and get the option to draw additional cards. The dealers only have the option of drawing cards till they get to a card total of 17.

After that they cannot draw anymore cards. If a player hits 21, they hit blackjack and win the pot. If their card totals exceed 21, they bust, or, lose. This game is one of the most renowned 2 player poker games.

Badugi

In this game, the dealer deals the cards to the players face down. Players are supposed to post the big and the small blinds, just like poker. All the players are supposed to call the big blind as it is considered the first bet of the game. Players have the option of drawing up to 4 fresh new cards from the deck of undealt cards after discarding unwanted cards.

After this, the second round of betting ensues where players raise bets and call raised bets. After this round of betting, the players have the option of drawing any other fresh cards after discarding unwanted cards. After this, the third round of betting ensues where players raise bets and call raised bets. The last round of drawing cards ensues. After the last round of drawing cards, the last betting round ensues.

After the last betting round, players who are still in the game and have not folded and forfeited the game have to appear for a showdown. In this showdown, the player with the best hand combination wins the game and takes everything in the pot. This game is regarded as one of the best 2 player poker card games.

Razz

Razz is a 2-player card game. In this game, the aim is to make the worst possible hand. The hand combinations in this game are similar to that of poker. The only difference between these two games is that the player with the worst possible hand combination wins. In this game, an ace is considered to be a low card i.e. its value is 1. Flushes have no value in razz and do not count as a hand combination.

The best possible hand combination is a hand combination of cards with rank 5 (5), rank 4 (4), rank 3 (3), rank 2 (2) and an ace (A). In this game, each player is dealt 3 cards by the dealer, 2 of which are face down and the last is face up. All the players need to post an ante, or, a mandatory bet before the starting of the game. The player with the lowest face up car is supposed to pay the bring in. The bring is a monetary penalty to the player with the lowest face up card and is more than the ante. The substitute for paying a bring in is a complete. These are usually more than the bring-ins.

The value of both, the bring in and the complete can be decided by all the players before the start of the game. as this is a betting game, the players get a chance to raise bets, call raised bets or fold their cards and forfeit the game. There is a set limit for raising bets. This betting happens clockwise. After the first turn, all players receive their fourth card, face up. In this turn, all the players are required to set their face up cards in the best possible hand combination. Just like the first round of betting, the betting cycle in this round also moves clockwise.

The same pattern continues with the dealing of the fifth and the sixth card. Razz is a game with limits and as described above, has includes betting with bets like the ante, small and big bet, etc. Once the seventh and the final card is dealt by the dealer, the players are supposed to show their cards and compare hand combinations. The player with the worst hand combination wins. This game is one of the most renowned 2 player poker games.

Players in this game have the option to discard their unwanted cards and pick up new cards from the deck of undealt cards. This can only happen after a round of betting has happened.

Another round of betting ensues after the players have discarded and drawn new cards. Players who are still in the game and have not folded and forfeited the game then have to compare the best 5 card hand combination with their opponents. The substitute for paying a bring in is a complete. These are usually more than the bring-ins.

The value of both, the bring in and the complete can be decided by all the players before the start of the game. as this is a betting game, the players get a chance to raise bets, call raised bets or fold their cards and forfeit the game. In this turn, all the players are required to set their face up cards in the best possible hand combination. Just like the first round of betting, the betting cycle in this round also moves clockwise.

The same pattern continues with the dealing of the fifth and the sixth card. Both are dealt face up and have to be arranged to form the best possible hand combination. The betting cycle continues. After the dealing of the seventh and the last card, dealt face down, the players still in the game have to form the best possible 5 card hand combination. The hand combinations to guess are the same as poker. The game goes anti-clockwise with every player shouting out what they think is the highest hand. This is the hand that they could be having, or this can be the hand that they are guessing that someone has. The last hand that is guessed should exist by combining all the cards on the table. If the hand does not exist, then the person who shouted out that hand loses. If someone calls them out and it exists, then they lose. This game is a lot like bluff. If the person who calls them out and the hand does not exist, then the person who called that hand out wins. This game is regarded as one of the best 2 player poker card games.
