What does a split pot mean?

Splitting the pot basically means splitting the pot between 2 or more players in a game instead of awarding it to one single player. This is done for one of 2 reasons, either there is a tie between two players, for example, in a game of Texas Hold’em, if 2 players have the same hand combination, the pot is split between them, also known as the Texas Hold’em split pot, or the rules of the game require the pot to be split, for example, a game of high-low split poker requires the pot to be split. The most common split pot that is done is the Texas Hold’em split pot. In the Texas Hold’em split pot, the pot is split evenly between two or more players, depending on the hand combinations of each of them.

For a pot to be split, one of the players sitting at the virtual table is tasked with comparing and stacking the chips. This is done by stacking chips of the same denomination and stacking them side by side to compare their heights. If their heights are the same, then both those stacks are of equal monetary quantity. In the event of there being chips of multiple denominations consisting of the pot, the largest denomination is stacked up and kept aside first, followed by all the smaller denominations. If the number of chips of the higher denominations are odd in number, the odd one out can be replaced by chips of smaller denominations to make the stacks equal. This is done for all the odd numbers of chips in any stack.

There are times where there is a single chip of the smallest denomination left out of after splitting the pot. There are several ways to deal with this situation. Some of the most common ways to deal with this situation are-

·         In a game of high-low split poker, the odd chip of the smallest denomination that is left out is awarded to the player with the high hand combination.

·         If a pot is being split due to 2 players with the same hands i.e., tied hands, then the odd chop goes to the players with the highest card. If both players have the same high card, then suits are considered to break the tie. The ranking of the suits is

o   Spades

o   Hearts

o   Diamonds

o   Clubs

Another move that can be made in a case like this is to award the odd chip of the lowest denomination that is left out to the player sitting to the left of the dealer.

·         Another thing that is very common to sort out a situation like this is to not give the odd chip of the smallest denomination that is left out while sorting out the split pot. Most players playing home games with their friends and relatives usually keep that extra chip and use it as an extra blind or an extra ante in the next game that is to be played.

These were just some of the most common ways in which odd chips are dealt with in a game. Players can decide how to deal with odd chips beforehand and then implement that move in case of there being an odd chip left out.

Split pot in poker variants

There are many variants of poker in which the rules of the game ask for a split pot in poker. These are-

Shared card poker

In this variant, a split pot in poker is not required at the very beginning of the game. Shared Card Poker is a variant of poker which warrants the use of shared cards. This is done by dealing individual card to each of the players and then dealing common cards for all the players on the table. These cards are called community cards. Some of the most famous shared card poker games are Texas Hold’em Poker and Omaha Poker. These two variants of Shared Card Poker are also some of the most famous poker games played throughout the world. A Texas Hold’em split pot in poker is required when two or more players have a tie in their hand combinations. In a case like that, the players are supposed to split the pot amongst them. The most common time where a Texas Hold’em split pot in poker is required is when two players have the same hand combinations. A three-way split pot in poker is very rare to come across in a game of Texas Hold’em poker or any other game of shared card poker.

Draw poker

A split pot in poker is not required at the very beginning of this game. Similar to the split pot rules in shared card poker, a split pot is required when two or more players have the same hand combinations. Draw poker is a variation of poker in which the players playing the game have the liberty to draw fresh cards from a deck of undealt cards to improve their hands. They can do so after discarding unwanted cards from their deck. Due to this advantage given to the players, a lot of players try and make the best hands possible before the final showdown is called for. It is then that the players compare hands before declaring the winner. Here also, if 2 or more players have the same hand combination, the pot is split amongst these players instead of the whole pot being awarded to only one player. Just like the split pot rules in the shared card variant of poker, a three-way split pot is very rare to come across.

Stud poker

A split pot in poker is not required at the very beginning of the game. Similar to the split pot rules in shared card poker and draw poker, a split pot is required when two or more players have the same hand combinations. In this variation of poker, players are dealt a card with a mixture of face-up and face-down cards. This is also called open poker. Here also, if 2 or more players have the same hand combination, the pot is split amongst these players instead of the whole pot being awarded to only one player. Just like the split pot rules in the shared card variant of poker and the draw card variant of poker, a three-way split pot is very rare to come across.

High-Low poker

This is the variant of poker in which a split pot is a part of the game and is in the rules. A split pot in poker is required in this game. This is because of the split in the hand combinations. In this game, a split in poker is required as the pot is supposed to be split between the players holding high hand combinations and low hand combinations. As the name suggests, there can be 2 winners in this game, one with the high hand combination and one with the low hand combination. In both cases, the winners win a part of the pot instead of the whole pot. This split pot in poker can be rewarded to either a single player or multiple players, depending on the who has the high and the low hand combinations.
