How to Play Razz Omaha?
Table of content:
Razz Poker is a form of stud poker. This is one of the oldest and most played variations of poker. Razz Poker has been around since the 20th century. This game became prominent with the introduction of the 52 card deck, the one used today for almost all card games. Razz Poker is a unique poker game. This is because in Razz Poker, instead of making hand combinations with the best possible cards, players have to make hand combinations with the worst possible cards, for example, a hand combination with the cards of rank 5, 4, 3, 2 and A is the best hand combination. This hand combination is also called the 5 high, the wheel or the bicycle.
The use of hand combinations with the worst possible cards makes Razz Poker also known as a variation called lowball poker. In Razz Poker, Ace holds the lowest value of 1 and comes before the cards of rank 2 (2). This makes the King (K) the card of the highest value in Razz Poker.

To start a game of Razz Poker, the dealer deals 3 cards to each of the players out of which two of those cards are dealt face down and one of the cards is dealt face up. Before the cards are dealt to the players, the payers have to post an ante or a blind to start the pot. This ante or blind is a mandatory bet to be made by all the players. The monetary value for these mandatory bets is decided before the game starts. Out of all the exposed or the face up cards, the player with the highest face up card is the first player of that round of Razz Poker. They have to start the game by posting another bet and adding money to the pot. This bet is known as the bring-in.
The game then begins for all the other players in a clockwise rotation from the player who posted the bring-in bet into the pot. After the first round of betting is complete, the dealer deals a fourth card to all the players. This card is also dealt face up to all the players. This fourth card is also known as the fourth street. After the fourth street is dealt to all the players, the players with the strongest fourth street, in this case, the fourth street with the lowest rank, is the first player for that round. That player has the options to either check i.e. make no bet and contribution to the pot, or raise a bet.
If no player posts a bet, there is no contribution to the pot and the players can advance in the next round. If a bet is raised in this round, all the players need to call that raised bet to stay in the game and advance to the next round, or they can fold. After this betting round is complete, the dealer deals a fifth card to all the players. This card is also dealt face up. This card is known as the fifth street. The player with the strongest fifth street starts that round and has the option to either check or raise a bet. The other players have to make their decision based on the decision that the first player of that round made.
After that round of betting is done, the dealer deals the sixth card. This card is also dealt face up and is known as the Sixth street. The rules for this card are the same as the rules for the fifth and the sixth street. After the betting round is over for the sixth street, the seventh and the last card is dealt. This card is dealt face down to all the players. The players have the option of viewing this card, but it needs to be kept a secret from the other players. This card is also known as the seventh street or the river. The rules for moving on this card are the same as the rules for the fourth street, the fifth street and the sixth street. The only difference in the rules is that for the earlier streets, the player with the strongest street got to start the round.
For the seventh street or the river, the player with the best combination of strongest streets gets to start this round. The betting continues as usual for this round as well. Now comes the showdown. In the showdown, the remaining players have to show the hand combinations that they have made, starting from the player who posted the last bet. The player with the best hand combination wins the game and takes away everything in the pot and wins that game of razz poker.
As with all poker games, all the bets placed in Razz Poker have to be within a certain limit. This limit is decided by all the players or it is determined from the table rules. If there is no limit for the bets and raises, players can post bets of any amount as small or as big as they would like.
Strategy is key in any game of poker, be it Texas Hold’em or Razz Poker. You may not always win wit the hand that you have been dealt, but you can always strategize in such a way that you get the best result from the hand dealt to you. Here are strategies to use when playing Razz Poker to get the best results-
Calculaing the odds
Calculating the odds is one of the key skills required for becoming an unbeatable player. One of the aspects of Razz Poker that makes it so special is the fact that your opponent’s cards are visible to you. Use that to your advantage. With the knowledge of your opponent’s cards, you can easily calculate the odds of you winning and can easily form a strategy to be used to win.
Knowing when to bluff
Bluffing is a very important part, not just of Razz Poker, but also of any other form of Poker. This is because a lot of games can be won by bluffing, if done at the right time and in the right way. In the case of Razz Poker, bluffing is considered to be hard as your cards are on display for the other players. By buffing about your face down hole cards, the least that can happen is that the weaker players can fold, making your path to victory a little less hard.
Have an aggressive stance
One of the most important things about Razz Poker is that you need to have an aggressive stance while playing. Forcing your opponents to call your raise or fold is a very important strategy to put to use while playing. The more pressure you put on your opponents to fold or bet, the faster you can crack the game. The players with the weaker hands will start folding, giving you the perfect opportunity to win.
