During the Covid-19 pandemic, everyone is investing their free time in learning a new game and recently online card games have seen a huge bump in their player count. Out of all the card games Poker has seen the most player growth and there is a reason why. Poker is one of the most popular card games out there that requires a lot of skill with a dash of luck. In this players are dealt some cards (the number of cards depends on the variant of poker) which is followed by rounds of betting. Once all the betting rounds are complete every player turns up his/her cards and the winner is decided depending on their hand.
The world is full of cutthroat poker players that won’t care if you are a newbie player or a seasoned professional, they just want to win. So before heading out to the world of poker it’s important to practice a little with someone you know. If you do not have many players to play with you can play two player poker games with the next person you can find and here are some rules that will help you play two player poker games without any issue.
This is probably one of the most confusing things in two player poker games as three buttons (dealer, small blind, big blind) need to be distributed among two players. However, there is a simple solution to it, The player who gets the small blind button also gets the dealer button while the other player gets the big blind button. These buttons are switched every round to make sure everybody gets a chance to become the small blind. To determine who gets to be the dealer first you can pick a card from the deck and the one with the bigger card gets to be the dealer.
If one of you is a more experienced dealer then he/she can deal the cards in every round and switch only the big blind and small blind buttons.
Now that the blinds are decided, it is time to start dealing the cards although it is simple to deal cards in a normal poker game, it becomes a completely different thing in two player poker games.
While playing two player poker, the dealer always acts first. This rule is exactly the same as in normal poker games with more players but can get messed up in two player poker games.
After the flop, the dealer always goes last. This gives the dealer an opportunity to have more information about his opponent’s cards.
Once the cards are dealt, the players make their move with the big blind moving first and the dealer gets to play last. After the round is played the buttons are switched and the next round starts.
Playing just a single variant of poker can get boring quite fast so here are some different two player poker games that you can try:
- Texas Hold’em:
It is one of the most played two player poker games out of all the poker variants out there. In this game, two cards are dealt face down to both the players and five community cards are dealt face up in three stages and every stage is followed by a round of betting. Once all the cards are dealt the game is concluded with one last round of betting before every player turns up their cards.
- 5 Card Draw:
This is one of the easiest poker games that every rookie player plays before moving to more complex games like Texas Hold’em. In this card game, both the players pay their designated ante before the start. After that 5 cards are dealt to both the players. In 5 Card Draw Poker, flop, turn and river are replaced by two bettings. After the cards are dealt there is a discarding round in which every player gets to discard up to 3 cards (4 cards only if you have an Ace with you). Now replacement cards are dealt to the players. After that, there is another round of betting then the cards are shown and the one with the biggest hand takes the pot.
- Pot Limit Omaha:
Pot Limit Omaha has the same rule set as Texas Hold’em except one or two changes here and there. In Pot Limit Omaha, both the players are dealt with 4 cards instead of 3 and having a Diamond in your hand does not make a flush on a board with four diamond cards.
- 7 Card Stud:
This game starts with 2 cards down and 1 card up out of three that is dealt to both the players. Then there is a betting round. After that other cards are turned one by one where each turn is followed by a round of betting. Once both players each have 7 cards, the dealing is complete and the game is concluded.
