Omaha hi lo or Omaha high low is one of the versions of Omaha. It is named so because in the game the pot is divided into the best hand for high and best hand for low. Omaha hi lo is a popular game which is usually played with fixed-limit betting and often turns up in mixed game formats such as H.O.R.S.E where the O stands for Omaha hi lo.
The Omaha hi lo rules are just similar to those of Omaha rules. Omaha hi lo is a “split-pot” version of Omaha poker where players fight for high as well low halves of the pot. The pot is divided into two halves, high and low. To qualify for low, a player must have an 8-7-6-5-4 or lower value card and this is why it is also known as “eight or better”. If no one achieves to make a low hand value, the high hand wins the entire pot.
A low hand is ranked from its highest card downwards in Omaha high low. For example, #9 is referred to as “six-low”, #5 is a “seven-low” and #1 is an “eight-low” and furthermore. When a player makes a qualifying low hand which is also a straight or flush, it becomes a very powerful hand which can win both high and low halves of the pot. This situation is known as “scoop”.

According to Hi Lo poker rules, the game is played with a “qualifier” for the low hand. This means that the cards making a low hand have to be ranked eight or lower.
