●      Royal Flush

A Royal Flush consists of a Ten, Jack, King, Queen and Ace of the same suit. It is the strongest hand in a game of five card draw poker. Drawing the royal flush means nothing can stop you from winning this round.

●      Straight Flush

A Straight Flush is the second best one amongst all the five cards draw poker hands and consists of 5 cards of the same suit in sequential order. For example - a three, four, five, six and seven all of ♣.

●      Four-of-a-kind

If out of the 5 cards drawn, four are of the same denomination then you have something called four-of-a-kind which is the third highest hand in the 5 card poker hands.

●      Full House

Three cards of a single denomination and two of the other denomination results in a Full House. For example, a pair of 2s and three-of-a-kind 3s

●      Flush

There are four suits in a deck of cards and if you have five cards of different denominations, but all from the same suit, then you have a Flush.

●      Straight

Straight, as the name suggests, consists of 5 cards in a sequential order and they don’t even need to be of the same suit. For example, a five, six, seven, eight and nine of any suit mixed up.

●      Three-of-a-kind

Having three cards of the same denomination means that you are dealing with a Three-of-a-kind. Don’t underestimate this hand as it has defeated a lot of people not just in at-home games but also in professional tournaments.

●      One pair

Most of the poker games are played with a pair of cards because they are more likely to appear in your hand and five card poker is no exception. However, as having a one-pair hand is quite common, it can be hard to beat someone unless you have a number pair that’s higher than your opponents’.

●      High card

A hand with none of the combinations mentioned above is judged by the highest card. If two or more players have the same high card, then the hand is judged by its second highest card, then third and so on.

If two or more players have the same hand in poker 5 cards, then the one with the highest card wins that round. To know more about the order of hands in poker, read this detailed article!

How to play the game of 5 card draw poker?

Unlike the rules of other games, five card draw poker rules aren’t just limited to how each player will have his/her turn, but also on how the entire match will progress and what choices you can pick and strategise with to make the most out of these poker 5 cards

1. First the dealer deals everyone 5 cards out of the deck. The number of cards replaced and given to the player by the dealer should be equal to the number of cards discarded by the same player. Therefore, the players will always have 5 cards in their hand.

2. A player can replace and draw up to all 5 of his/her cards after each betting round. The number of discarded and drawn cards are different in different places.

3.   The bets are placed, which can happen in the following two ways:-

i) Ante

· Ante is more popular in friendly games. In this method, everyone places a bet of a fixed amount that’s decided beforehand.

· In an ante game, the first player along with the options of raise, bet and fold has the option to check. If the player checks, then that player does not have to choose between fold, bet and raise. They can stay in the hand for free.

· In an ante game, there is no option for check after a bet is placed. So the check option is possible only before the first bet is raised.

· In an ante game, the first player along with the options of raise, bet and fold has the option to check. If the player checks, then that player does not have to choose between fold, bet and raise. They can stay in the hand for free.

· In an ante game, there is no option for check after a bet is placed. So the check option is possible only before the first bet is raised.

ii) Blinds

In this there will be a small blind (which is half the amount of big blind) and a big blind.

Since you will be playing the online version of five cards draw, the chips and the five cards will be given automatically to you, after paying the ante or the blinds, so that you may enjoy a hassle free game without wasting any time.

4. First Round of Betting

After the chips and cards which are allotted face down to each player, the first round of betting starts. Each player will have the option to fold, raise or call. If no one raises or bets, players have the option to check, which means that they will stay in the hand for free without giving anything to the pot. But the option of check is available only when no player has bet or raised to the pot.

· Fold –This means that the player does not pay to the pot and removes his hand.

· Call – This means that the player will pay equal to the size of the big blind.

· Raise – This means that the player will pay double the amount of the big blind.

· Check – This means that the player will stay in the hand for free. This option is not available for use after the bet is placed.

5. The Draw

After the first round of betting is finished, the players who are still present in the hand have two options –

· Discard – If the player chooses to discard his/her cards, new cards will automatically be given to the player replacing the discarded cards. The new cards drawn will be equal to the number of cards discarded.

· Stand Pat –  if the player likes the cards in hand, then he/she can choose to stand pat. This means the player will not be discarding and drawing any of his/her cards.

6. Last Round of Betting

When reaching the final round of betting, the active players have the same options as mentioned above – if the players are facing a bet, they have the option to fold, call or raise. On the other hand, if the players are not facing a bet, they have an additional option to check, which will be available only if there are no bets placed.

7.   The Showdown

Once the final betting round of the five cards draw is over and if there is more than one player left, then the player with the best poker cards or with the high card draw which is the ace, wins the pot. 2)      If a person bets, then as per rules for 5 card stud any other player can either “call” the bet, meaning place the same bet as the one put by the previous player, “raise” increase the previous bet or “fold”, become ineligible to win the current game.

3)      However, according to rules for 5 card stud if a player checks at his turn and another player makes a bet, the player who checked then has the option to raise the bet made by the other player. This in simple terms is known as “check and raise”.

However, unlike blinds, instead of two players, all the players in the game put their money into the pot. Now, ante bets in general are quite a small amount. For instance - if the small bet is Rs.100 and the big bet is Rs.1000 then the ante bet will be anywhere between Rs10 and Rs.200.

2)      Hole Card - In the beginning of 5 card stud poker, each player is basically dealt 1 card face down. Now, according to rules for 5 card stud, this card is known as the hole card. Once the hole cards are allotted, then the next card (otherwise known as door card) is allotted to each player, face up.

First betting round

This round of betting usually starts with the player with the lowest card by value and suit. According to the rules for 5 card stud the bet placed by the first player is known as the “force” or “bring-in” bet. Now, in the event that two or more players hold door cards of the same suit, then the lowest card is decided based on the suit. In case the player chooses to put a lower limit bet then as per rules for 5 card stud poker, any other hand which is still in the game can choose to either raise on the lower limit or put a higher limit bet itself. However, once the higher limit bet is put by any other player then as per rules for 5 card stud all further bets and raises will be made at the higher limit only.

Fourth street and third betting round

After the completion of the second betting round the fourth card or “fourth street” is allotted to each player by default in the online game. Now, as per rules for 5 card stud the third round of betting will begin starting with the player with the highest three-card value (door card plus third street plus fourth street). In this round and all further rounds of 5 card stud poker the bets and raises will thereafter be made at the higher limit only.

Fifth street and fourth betting round

Finally, the fifth card or “fifth street” is allotted to each player in the game. Here on, the fourth and last betting round will begin again starting with the player with the highest four-card value (door card plus third street plus fourth street plus fifth street). In fifth street too as in fourth street all bets and raises are made at the higher limit only.

Showdown

After the completion of all the betting rounds, the players who are still left in the game open their hole cards. Thereafter, as per rules for 5 card stud poker the player with the highest hand according to the official poker hand rankings generally wins the pot.
