Email vs Phone

..there once was a convenience called email
..it seemed more efficient than snail mail
..but all of a sudden
..at the (lack of a) push of a button
..replying turned from simple respect to fail !

Does it seem to you that people are just not responding to email the way they have in the past?

Email has always been my preference for both sending and receiving messages, because the receiver can choose when to interrupt their flow with the sent message. Think of it this way:

..you're buzzing along, working like crazy, finally getting your Inbox down from 800 to 100 messages.
"BBBRING BBBRING.." (or the crazy frog soundtrack.. whatever!)
... you have to down tools and answer the phone. and most phone calls will cause you to make a phone call yourself... so your flow has well and truly been broken.

Vs

..you're buzzing along, working like crazy... finally whittling down your Inbox and a new email arrives at the top of the list. You can choose to save it for later, when you've completed the task at hand.

BUT, although the receiver may be choosing when to read a sent message, they are just not responding.

Have you noticed..? Don't you receivers know about Ctrl + R? (reply!)

As the impatient sender, you have a couple of options - you can go into your Sent Items folder, open the message and simply Resend it without editing... giving a gentle push to the receiver that you're waiting... waiting... waiting.

OR you can send another email: ".. hi there! not sure if you got that last email, so I'll give you a call tomorrow to check...". If they are someone who doesn't want their FLOW interrupted with that buzzing crazy frog, you can bet they'll send the reply through by email in a jiffy.

What do you think?

** Good Morning Australia - everyone is asking me what's happening with Bert and GMA. I didn't actually know there were any issues until today, when I read about it in The Eye. Mark Holden is being rumoured to replace Bert on GMA next year. God help us! How cool does Mark think he is? Very... but so old cool!! blah!

Anyway - all I can say is that the same discussion comes up every year around contract time... and every year Bert is back.
