Excel:

Don't be scared of your spreadsheeting program just because its all about crunching numbers. You don't need a degree in accounting to make it work as well for you as your other favourite programs!

Great uses for Excel:

  • Create a calendar by typing the first couple of months you want along the top, then selecting those months, then using the autofill handle to drag to the right to autofill the following months in.
  • Use Autofill for other things, like when you want to enter product or part numbers sequentially - for example, enter PD300 then PD330, select those and drag the autofill handle to have Excel automatically enter PD360, PD390, etc.
  • To get to a specific spot in the sheet quickly, press the F5 key, then type in the cell reference. You can even type in a reference to a group of cells, like A1:C4
  • Go crazy typing a list in any order, and then use the Sort function to automatically sort it! Select the list you've typed, go to Data, Sort and choose which column you'd like to sort by. If you've typed headings for your list like CD NAME, ARTIST, etc - make sure you click the header row button to prevent the headings being included in the sort.
  • type in some vertically, then click in the blank cell underneath them. Double click the Autosum button (Delta symbol) up on the toolbar and Excel will automatically add them for you.
  • select any group of numbers you'd like to graphically chart, then click the charting toolbar button and answer the questions in the Chart Wizard to create a chart in a few seconds! Double click any aspect of the chart to change its properties.
  • Press F1 on your keyboard and look up help on any topics you want more info on.
