Charities Online
Australia's Top 30 charities raised an estimated $600 million dollars last year. Although struggling to find new avenues for funding, they've all realised the power the Internet gives them. They become instantly accessible to a global audience, allowing people to support them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Donations.com.au is a great example of this - a site that supports all Australian charities, with a free listing and a great search engine for you to find the charity you'd like to support.
If charities wish to also make it possible for you to donate online securely, they pay donations.com.au a small monthly fee.
You can search by charity, by cause/even and even browse by charity if you've got a few spare dollars and want to use them for good, not evil!
Most charities have their own web site, some very basic - right through to advanced, e-commerce enabled sites.
Check out:
www.the-frog.com. A simple means for community groups to raise funds using the Internet. Supporters visit The-Frog.com website and shop at their favourite stores (such as Dell, Borders, Lands' End, dstore, wishlist, Amazon and more).
www.free2give.com.au is a similar story - you shop online and get to choose a charity for a percentage of the purchase price to be donated to.
www.slsv.asn.au - Surf Life Saving Victoria's website allows you to donate to your own favourite beach, or just generally. This site is a great example of how charities have had to find new ways to generate funds. One of their own volunteers was killed can-collecting from the traffic a few years ago.
www.pcsforkids.org helps find PC's for kids in need.
Most hospitals will have a website with all sorts of information about their volunteer and fund raising needs. Ask your own local hospital for their web address, or use www.altavista.com.au to do a search.
