Things to know when buying a digital camera:

MegaPixel
'mega' = 1 million pixels. The more pixels in your image, the higher the resolution which equates to a better quality image for printing. If your photos are going to be viewed only on a computer screen, a low resolution is fine as a computer screen will only display 72 dots per inch. If you will want to print your photos out as images you can put in a frame, high resolution is best.

Optical and digital zoom
Optical zoom works the same way as a normal camera, that is, it magnifies the image before it is recorded as pixels.
Digital zoom magnifies the image after it is recorded as pixels by cropping the image and enlarging the pixels... which gives a lower quality image.

Different memory formats
All cameras have a method for storing the images - just like your normal camera uses film. You will find that all of the current digital cameras available can be upgraded by adding these memory cards. Different types of memory cards can sometimes be used in other devices like camcorders and MP3 players. You'll find SmartMedia; Sony Memory Stick, CompactFlash, etc.

Battery types
Some digital cameras simply take AAA or AA batteries, which makes them easy to recharge on the road - just change the batteries. Other digital cameras come with Lithium Ion batteries, which gives you much more battery time, but you'll need to take a power pack or recharge unit with you if you're likely to need a recharge.
