As you can imagine, working in the magazine world is all deadline-driven!
I never really understood the nail-biting urgency involved with the collection of articles from different writers from all sorts of different points. With Woman's Day, I share a sub-editor with a couple of other writers and we are all required to get our copy to her by email each Wednesday. It goes something like this:
- I come up with a list of 8 topics that I plan to write about.
- We organise a photographer and hair and makeup artist and a location, then go and shoot 8 photos to go with the stories
- I spend a day (sometimes a week, if I need information from different sources) writing my column and send it by email each Wednesday.
- My editor edits! She may send it back for review or changes, request graphics or more info and sometimes even help on getting rid of too many words!
A couple of weeks after submission, I receive a faxed copy of the layout with all the graphics and photo in place and proof-read it for technical accuracy.
- The page gets printed and is ready to slot into the magazine.
- You read it, hopefully learn something and sometimes email me!
